A lot of triathletes are aware of how fast they’re swimming.
If you’re not, you should be!

How do you know?
Count your strokes!
If there’s a big change in efficiency, you want to know about it.
If you’re in the middle of a set, and you start taking 3 more strokes each lap, something has changed, and it’s probably not good.
Just by keeping track of your stroke counts you’ll start to improve your efficiency, and your speed.
