How To Create A Set Part VI

Build it

Hopefully, the process of building a great set for YOU is becoming a little clearer, and seems more manageable. The key is to keep it simple. Once you have the process down, you can get really fancy. You can have changing intensity levels, changing distances, changing intervals, or anything else you can imagine.

Just keep it simple and follow the roadmap below-

  • Decide what you want to accomplish. Why are you getting in the pool today? What skills do you want to improve? With a clear goal in mind, sets almost write themselves.

  • Decide what tools you want to use to best accomplish the goal. When you know the goal, the tools you can use to accomplish those goals become evident. Pick the tool that’s going to help you most.

  • Decide the context you want to work in. Do you want to improve your awareness, work on your speed, improve your fitness, or get better at racing with skill? That decisions determines the general approach of the set.

  • Decide how many subtasks you can handle. Include more tasks when your dominating the sets. Scale it back if you’re struggling.

  • Decide how much you can do WELL. Know your limits and keep the quality high.

Once you get the hang of this, it doesn’t take much reflection at all to make it happen. It just happens. The process becomes much more fluid and a lot more effective. Give it a little time and you’ll be a pro. If that set works for what you wanted, keep it for future reference, tweaking it as you improve. If it didn’t work as well as you’d hoped, reflect on what you would change, and simply make the change.
