Making the Invisible Visible

 

Most coaches change symptoms.  

 

They focus on the superficial issues while ignoring the underlying causes of why you’re struggling in the water.  

 

It’s not laziness, they simply can’t see them.

 

They’re invisible.

 

 In contrast, I show you the underlying reasons why you’re not swimming as well as you’d like.  

 

I make the invisible visible.

 

I’ve watched 1,000s(!) of frame by frame video of swimmers ranging from Olympic Champions breaking world records to 10-year old kids performing strokes that flirt with disqualification.  

 

I’ve seen it all.  

 

Coupled with an extensive study of what drives fast swimming, I’ve learned to see what drives fast swimming, and what actually causes many of the stroke flaws that emerge.  

 

I learned the difference between cause and effect.

 

When there is a clear understanding of the principles that determine fast swimming, these root causes become outstandingly visible.  

 

Fortunately, these principles are easy to grasp, and once you see why you’re moving the way you are, it’s impossible to UNsee it.  

 

With understanding comes EFFECTIVE action.

 

Making the Complicated Simple

 

I’m sure you’ve had coaches describe your skills as if they were reading from a fluid dynamics dissertation when trying to explain to you how to fix your technique.  

 

While the coach may have sounded smart, I expect you left the conversation more confused than when you started.  

 

You had no idea what to actually do.

 

That’s not my style.  

 

I explain the REAL cause in simple, clear terms and I tell you exactly what you need to do about it.  I don’t tell you 6 extra pieces of information to sound smart.  

 

I tell you what you need to know so that you can actually implement the information to accomplish your goals.

 

You may be plagued with many technical errors.  Instead of focus on the all the noise, I focus on what matters.  

 

I keep it simple and focus on the major issues that will end up fixing most of the remaining problems.  

 

That’s efficiency and effectiveness.

 

It gives you a plan for action.  

 

A plan for action helps you swim faster.

FEEL-Based Solutions

 

Many other coaches have one solution for each problem they see (and they’re already not seeing the real problem).  

 

Unfortunately, one solution doesn’t work for every person, or even most people.  If you identify a problem and can’t fix it, you’re no better off than if you didn’t know you had a problem in the first place.  

Fortunately for you, I’ve seen all the mistakes and helped triathletes with all of them.  I’ve helped them make changes that actually stick.  

 

Once we’ve made the invisible visible and complicated simple, it’s time to make the change.

 

The activities I’ll suggest you perform are specifically designed to help you FEEL what you need to feel.  

 

A dirty little secret is that better swimming often feels NOTHING like you expect it to.  Most coaches are focused on providing solutions based upon what your swimming should look like.  

 

Of course, that’s not much use to you because you can’t see yourself while you’re swimming.  FEEL is where it’s at.

 

These aren’t the drills you’ve read about in books and they’re not performed for the same purpose.  It’s different.

I’m going to help you learn the fundamentals.  

 

Even if we do perform an activity you’re already familiar with, we’re likely going to perform it with a very different purpose, focusing on very different aspects of swimming.  

 

This is a comprehensive attack on skill development.  This is about empowering you to coach yourself.  By knowing what to feel, you can drive your own learning processes.

  • A full analysis of the major components of your swimming including body position and alignment, breathing action, underwater arm action, overwater arm action, leg action, and timing between the different components.

  • The PRINCIPLES behind why you’re moving in certain ways.  I’ll help you separate cause and effect so that you know where to focus your attention, rather than getting distracted by symptoms.  These root causes are often occurring where you least suspect it, and I’ll show you how to address these underlying issues. 

  • An understanding of how all of your actions are affecting the propulsion you’re creating, the resistance you’re creating, and the rhythm of your stroke.

  • Specific activities you can implement to address the opportunities we uncover.  For each major issue, I’ll provide multiple skill adaptation tasks to make sure we find a solution that works for you. For each task, I will include video and written descriptions of how to do it, the key aspects to focus on, and the ways to program these activities into your training.

  • Overwater footage filmed from the side

  • Overwater footage filmed from the front

That's it!

If you have underwater footage, that's even better, but it's not necessary.

 

2.  Clear goals.  I need to know what you’re hoping to get feedback on.  The more specific your questions and problems, the better I’ll be able to serve you.  The devil is often in the details.  If you’re having specific issues, I’ll be better able to assist you with those issues the more I am aware of them.  The more we address what YOU want to address, the more likely you’ll be able to implement change.  That being said, I’ll provide feedback about any opportunity I see.
